SETT refresh

Kelly Services science homepage redesign

Overview

Kelly Science, Engineering, Technology, & Telecom (SETT) is a product of Kelly Services that connects job seekers with companies in the science, engineering, technology and telecom fields. This site is primarily for a B2B audience. Job seekers can find links on this site that take them to myKelly where they can start a job search. The site needed a refresh and we started with the homepage with the goal of increasing conversion rates.

My Role

As the UI Designer, my role was to make content suggestions, create a new page layout, and update imagery based on information gleaned from the site analytics.

Process

Research and planning

After digesting the site analysis there were several priorities we had for the site refresh.

We noticed the “How we can help” section that highlighted four SETT products was getting very little action. The section only had the name of the products and an icon as a link to a product page. I suggested fleshing out the information by adding imagery and a paragraph describing the product which our SEO Writer wrote.

I added a “Let’s talk” button in the sticky nav so there would always be a link available to take you down to the form at the bottom of the page.

The branding guidelines called for use of custom-made illustrations as the imagery. I was going to create design options with photos of people to add a human component as well as the SETT illustrations.

Concepts

Next are the layout concepts. I kept in mind blocks that were already available and how any new blocks might work with them while I was sketching. Before I present concepts to the stakeholder, if there is a potential new block being created, I like to meet with the Developer to make sure it’s possible, and to work out a timeline.

Imagery

SETT had been using their custom abstract illustrations throughout the site. Photography with a gradient overlay was permitted if using the illustrations was not possible. Since I was creating several designs using photography, I wanted to make sure there was at least one concept with illustration as the hero image so the stakeholder could see the contrast.

Final design

We were pleasantly surprised when the stakeholder chose the below concept that leans heavily on photography. The only change was for the hero image to have a female engineer in a lab coat.

Dev work
The chosen concept had blocks that needed to be developed and I worked with our Developer to accomplish this. I gave him a marked up mock via Figma link and we went over the new blocks together. Once he developed the blocks we sat together to QA and make minor adjustments on the spot.

Impact

The stakeholder was very happy with the new design, it looked more modern and relatable with the human image component.
